Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Florian Decludt, based in Baltimore, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help small business owners automate their B2B prospecting through cold emailing.

Tell us about yourself

It first started as a thought experiment. I kept seeing people talking about solopreneurship, but I noticed a trend: few were married, very few had kids, and none had special needs kids. So I thought to myself: "What if I created a side hustle by myself in just one hour a day?" and got cracking. Now I use it as a means to tinker around with new things and do creative work - things I can't really do work for someone else. It's just fun (and lucrative).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For me, it's been the ability to generate $2,500 in revenue working less than 10 hours, despite not having a business incorporated. I had to ask a friend to create the invoice for me to be able to get paid.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The trickiest is definitely time management. Since no one's telling you what to do, you have to structure your day yourself...and have the discipline to follow that structure, even when you don't feel like it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

On top of my head:

  1. Keep it simple. Simple beats fancy.
  2. Start with what you know. It'll help you execute faster.
  3. Don't wait till it's perfect for execution. Growth comes from iterating.
