What's your business, and who are your customers?
Flick of the Whisk Cakes specializes in custom luxury cakes for weddings, birthdays, and celebrations. My customers range from couples having a small elopement-style wedding to companies hosting significant corporate events.
Tell us about yourself.
Hi! I’m Bryanna, and I started Flick of the Whisk Cakes in 2019 while working as an interior designer. I desired something more for myself and took a leap of faith in starting my business.
I didn’t have any prior baking or cake decorating experience, but this must have been a hidden talent of mine because I picked it up right away. I am constantly motivated by my customers, who support and encourage me every single day. I will never get tired of the joy on their faces when they pick up their cake.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment believes in myself enough to quit my full-time job after just a year of starting my business. I wasn’t sure if this would work out, but I was motivated and had a vision, and it has been the best decision I’ve ever made.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is finding a balance between work and my personal life. I am thinking about my business 24/7, which can affect my mental health and self-care. I experienced burnout a year ago after overbooking and overworking myself. After that, I focus heavily on self-care and try to encourage those around me to do the same.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start before you’re ready. There will never be a perfect time.
- Find time for yourself. Your business cannot be successful if you are not healthy enough to run it.
- Connect with other entrepreneurs and build a solid, supportive network. Support those who support you.
