Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dance education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Fitzgerald, Director of Flatirons Dance, located in Arvada, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Flatirons Dance Academy is committed to bringing quality dance instruction to local schools and communities. Each class focuses on the history, vocabulary, technique, and cultural context behind the dance. The class fosters structured and supportive interactions with classmates, gives practice in problem-solving, and builds academic as well as artistic skills. Additionally, the class highlights the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and positive group interaction. Students of each session will have the opportunity to perform in a presentation showcasing the knowledge gained during the classes for their peers, teachers, family, and community.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Jessica. I've been a dancer since I was there. I've always had a passion for dance, but through the years, that passion has evolved to helping kids find their own passion. I'm motivated by our dancers. It excites me to see their drive and success; I love that they spend all of their free time at the studio, and their drive to perfect their craft is what motivates me every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being a part of a dancer's life for a period of time. Some of our dancers are in high school, and I started teaching them when they were 3. Seeing them develop into amazing people and being a part of their life is something I never take for granted.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is letting people down. You have to have growing pains to learn, and any time we lose customers because of mistakes is super hard.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take feedback and love it.
  2. Learn from other people.
  3. Never stop wanting to be better.
