Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tal Bee, Founder of Flamoro Candle Co., located in Alexandria, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner of the Flamoro Candle Co., Offering luxury candles and wax melts to encourage women to have self-care moments. All scents are hand-curated by me to ensure that they are free of phthalates and/or synthetics, as I do not believe that my customers should have to choose between their health or candles and wax melts. I custom blend and hand-pour each scent to create an ambiance for my customers. All scents are created to inspire women to focus on themselves and their well-being.

Tell us about yourself

As a mother and working professional, I found myself often overworked and exhausted. I would often neglect my own self-care and push my needs to the side in an effort to "get through it." This often led to me becoming burned-out and unmotivated. I noticed that a lot of women around me were doing the same thing. They were pushing through their day in an effort to get through it, only to wake up and repeat the same cycle the next day. In addition to that, there was a stigma behind women placing themselves first as being selfish. When in fact, it was the complete opposite.

I wanted to change this narrative. I wanted to advocate for so many women (like myself) who were told that prioritizing their needs first was a selfish act. I also wanted to create a space where women could use scents to do this, as the scent is a very powerful motivator. It can literally affect your mood. My goal is to continue to educate, encourage, and empower women to take self-care moments. Each scent that I make is created with this in mind to encourage a self-care journey and experience.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is witnessing the moment when a customer takes their first sniff of my candles or wax melts and sees the joy that comes across their faces. Within that moment, regardless of what they may or may not be going through, I can see how the customer allows the scent to provide them a moment of peace. That is the biggest accomplishment for me and will continue to be because it's such a beautiful moment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is trying to be everything at once. You are passionate about your business, so you want every aspect of it to be perfect. It definitely takes balance and organization.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find something you are passionate about. That passion will carry you through on the hard days.
  2. Be yourself. Your customers are more likely to relate to you or your business.
  3. Create a plan to objectively assess your business. This means assessing how to improve customer needs and business operations that will enable your business to flourish.
