Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melissa Mak, Owner of Fizzicle Kombucha by In Gut Company Pte Ltd., located in Singapore, Singapore.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Kombucha and kefir! Scoop Wholefoods (Singapore), Afterglow, Basque Kitchen, Social Space, Neptune, Atlas, Columbus, Supernova SYIP, Wanderlost, corporate customers, and more.

Tell us about yourself

Kombucha is something that we make in the family. Ancient Chinese surnames are either bestowed by emperors or due to some job that they had. We had a job - we were probably the palace fermenters or something. Our current surname is Mai 麦, which is a shortened version of our original surname 麹. My family had been kombucha brewers, and we simply formalized it into our current kombucha business. I get motivated by being able to contribute to the good health of others daily. That's just how I roll.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think growing the family business from a state of ashes (few in Singapore knew about kombucha till the early 2010s) and to its current flourishing state due to the amount of education that we laid the foundation for. We grew from a humble hawker centre station to a food factory.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think everything is a challenge. From getting the right people, place, price, and material, everything has never been smooth from day one. A lot of people think that we are able to just arrive at where we are without considering how hard we worked and the effort we put in along the journey.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be focused.
  2. Be focused.
  3. Be focused.
