Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Josh Froc, Co-Founder of FiveAM Challenge, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

There is a big challenge right now in creating a balance between (and within) work and life. This is no exception for high-achieving entrepreneurs, especially men who are also leaders. They set ambitious goals and love to work hard... and they achieve a lot. But even the best performance is even better with a team. We help them focus on some of the aspects that are harder to be accountable too... like recovery, personal growth, health, and relationships. It all starts by waking up and starting your day with intention.

Tell us about yourself

I have always wanted to be a business owner. I wanted freedom... I knew that I had no problem motivating myself, and honestly, I'm not a big fan of following rules or doing things without a clear "why." I started the 5 am challenge because I found that even for me, some described by others (and myself) as extremely motivated and self-disciplined... find I show up as a way better version of myself with accountability. The first place accountability starts, for me, is how I start my morning... and I'm actually NOT a morning person. If left to my own devices, I quickly drift back to a schedule of waking up at 9 or 10 am. I used to work in the restaurant industry, and before that, my mom always had a terrible time getting me up at 7 am for school.

What motivates me each day? Well, first, I'll answer an important assumption I think most people make about me. When I lead others through the FiveAM challenge, and I see the impact it makes on them, it makes it easy to wake up early. When I worked a corporate job, I felt guilty every single day that I wasn't doing enough. It's probably one of the reasons I worked so hard... but it also made my work much harder than it had to be, and based on what I know now, it certainly made things more difficult for me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

This may sound silly to some, but despite everything, my proudest accomplishment is still the day I quit my corporate job. I had tens of thousands of dollars coming my way in likely commissions (or so I reasoned). I was really getting the hang of my sales job, developing my pipeline, and being promoted to management... I could really see a bright future at this company. But it wasn't what I wanted. It wasn't my dream. Whether it was the "right" choice or not, I trusted my gut, and I turned it into the best decision, and that feels really good.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Something I find challenging and directly tied to my area of passion knows how to balance work and life. A big part of that is saying NO to great opportunities... as my business grows, the opportunities that come my way are better and better. As a result, to grow, I need to say no to better and better opportunities... to make room for the excellent ones! Making those decisions by myself can be hard for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Choose something you love and dream big first. Forget about logic. THEN create a plan for turning that dream into reality. (Don't forgo the planning phase - just don't start with it.)
  2. So far, no milestone I've crossed has magically changed my life. There is always a new challenge to overcome... there is always a new goal to set. Make sure to enjoy each day that you choose to be an entrepreneur and all the challenges that come with it...because it is a choice.
  3. Get good at dealing with mistakes. Perfectionism is a costly habit that really slows you down! The sooner you can welcome failure and the faster you can turn it into improvement, the better.
