What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Fitness Together, our mission is to provide our clients with high-quality, one-on-one Private Personal Fitness Training. Reaching your health and fitness goals with us is a personalized experience. At Fitness Together, it's all about the client and customizing a program for them using a variety of screening tools. Our typical client is either not comfortable going to a gym setting or just doesn't know where to start when it comes to beginning a fitness program.

Tell us about yourself

I understand the importance of accountability and consistency in pursuing one's physical fitness goals. In October of 2003, I completed my first personal trainer certification, and since then, I have been honored to work with a diverse set of clientele, from the infirm to Team USA Olympic athletes to models & other workers whose jobs depend on maintaining appearance & weight standards while excelling at a high level of mental & physical performance. In the last few years, I have really come to love coaching and mentoring up-and-coming fitness professionals and existing trainers and owners who are looking to take their success to the next level. I bought the business from my former boss back in 2013 and have never looked back! We continually push to provide the best service to our clients, and we help a market that is vastly underserved in the fitness world.

Do you have daily rituals for work / wellness / fitness / mindfulness?

I have a set of daily rituals that I can categorize in three ways: Body, Mind, & Spirit.

Body: 5-6 days/week, I aim for a minimum of 3 servings of vegetables (usually in one sitting for convenience), and every day (weather/precipitation permitting) spend at least 10 minutes outside just to revitalize and enjoy the fresh air.

Mind: Check a few different podcasts I like to learn from for updates, read at least one chapter or section of a spiritual/religious book & at one chapter of a non-religious nonfiction book.

Spirit: Pray the rosary and perform certain grounding practices twice/a day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as an owner is paying off all eight bank loans that I needed to purchase the business in just a four-year span!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The buck stops with you, as the saying goes. Whether a staff member is sick and you suddenly need to arrange accommodations for your clientele, a client is going through a rough patch in their life, and that may affect whether or not they will be returning for the time being, or a pandemic hits and you need to pivot direction on the fly... being flexible to challenges on a daily basis is crucial.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe and have a passion for what you choose to do.
  2. Know your market and to what extent it has a demand for what you wish to provide.
  3. Get a mentor to help you, preferably someone who has already successfully been through the process.
