Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey by launching a fitness business but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Craig Spear, owner of The Spear Method, in Dundas, Ontario, Canada.

What's your business and who are your customers?

My clients are professional, hard working family men who have worked hard to succeed in work and be supportive husbands and fathers, but it has come at a cost of their health.

My clients are 40+ year old men who want to lose weight and get in better shape so they can live more fulfilling lives and perform even better at work and show up even better for their families.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a former professional football player and long-time fitness professional. I played in the Canadian Football League and once my career was done I opened a chain of gyms.

Right before Covid hit, I sold my gym business. At that time, I was struggling to find a balance between being a new Dad and growing my own private coaching business.

I realized I shared a similar experience that my current clients do and so I pivoted to my current niche. In doing so, I have realized that weight loss is not about working out like crazy and eating only salads. It's much more about having the right mindset.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm really proud of helping my clients realize that so much more is possible in their lives. They initially come to see me because they want to lose weight, but as they go through the process, they learn so much more about themselves and what they are truly capable of.

So as much as I'd like to quantify this by saying I have helped men lose 100 lbs and more, I am even more grateful to see them go back to school or get a promotion at work and just love living life!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?Being patient.

Understanding that success comes when you practice better balance and not just work, work, work.

What are the top 3 tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

#1. Be passionate about learning. Listen to podcasts, read books, get certifications. Keep learning.

#2. Hire a coach..when you can afford to. A good coach will help you see your blind spots and keep you focused on what's important.

#3. Make sure your business/product/service solves a problem or pain point for your customer. Start there and always remember you are in business to help make people's lives easier/better.
