Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kerri Hallman, owner of Fit Lifestyle's by Kerri, located in Waterloo, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a stress-reduced Fat loss practitioner. I help busy women over 35 lose stubborn belly fat, get rid of bloating, and drop 2 pant sizes! I work with the body's hormones through proper nutrition to reduce body fat.

Tell us about yourself

I started as a personal trainer and fitness instructor simply because I loved fitness, so why not. This led to my personal training business for 8 years. I then became the owner of the gym I was working at and ran that while still teaching and doing PT for 8 years. During COVID, I knew I had to do something else just in case the gym didn't last, so I studied and became a Stress Reduced Fat Loss practitioner. I've worked with clients one-on-one and in groups to help them reduce their body fat while balancing their hormones. In May 2021, I made the difficult decision to close the gym and am now exclusively online. I work through zoom and Facebook with my clients, and it has been a great success so far!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Taking over a business and building it up after it wasn't doing so well. As well as leaving a bricks and mortars business and going online. It has its ups and downs, but I was proud that I was able to pivot and still make it work.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You are on the hook when things go wrong. No one else is there to take the reins... it's all on you.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research.
  2. Invest in yourself ~ keep your training up to date and always keep learning.
  3. Ask for help ~ there is always someone that will be there for you.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being in business for yourself is both rewarding and scary. The road is up and down and never a straight line. Keep plowing ahead, and you will see the benefits. One bad month doesn't wreck all your hard work.
