Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bryan Szeliga, Owner of Fishtown Seafood Company, located in Philadelphia, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a retail seafood shop in Philadelphia. Our customers are people who have been looking for quality seafood that is in the highest state of freshness.

Tell us about yourself

The idea for this business came from the fact there are so many misconceptions related to seafood. From the quality of "fresh" vs. frozen seafood to imported vs. domestic and even what is "sustainable," consumers deserve and want to know more about seafood, where it comes from, and how to prepare it. Our business was created to fill that gap in the market.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Within the first year of business, we received the great honor of Best of Philly 2022 by Philly Magazine within the seafood category.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The depth and breadth of work that needs to be completed daily. Staying focused on what needs to be completed at the moment while simultaneously working on the things that need to be done to keep the company positioned for success in the future is not easily accomplished.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The key to starting a successful business is how quickly you can identify problems, how fast you can solve those problems, and how well you can solve the problems.
  2. Don't spend money on things you don't need. Use your capital on something that will generate revenue. Friends and thrift stores can acquire things like printers and office supplies.
  3. Your business will be different six months after launch than it was on day one. So don't spend too much time on every possible detail in your business plan. You can write your business plan in just two days. Write it on the first day, sleep on it, make your final edits, and proofread it on the second day, done.
