Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Graham, President of Fionix Consulting LLC., located in Indian Trail, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Fionix Consulting is a strategic communications firm that provides corporate communications services, ranging from media relations and internal communications to social media and corporate responsibility to corporations, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the industry for more than 30 years, serving as a trusted industry leader and strategic thought partner, driving results for and making an impact on companies throughout the Carolinas and beyond. I started my company after leaving my last role as VP, chief communications and community officer for a $4 billion company.

I was able to launch Fionix successfully due to my track record of designing award-winning and dynamic solutions for a wide range of organizations in a variety of industries, as well as the relationships and partnerships I've developed. Regardless of the project or the work, there’s one purposeful throughline driving me and my work - to move ideas, people, and businesses forward in a new and impactful way
to make things better.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm very proud of Fionix Consulting, especially as I've just celebrated five years in business. One of my biggest accomplishments was training a client for an appearance on Shark Tank. My client ended up landing one of the biggest deals in the show's history - a $1 million investment from two Sharks. They just appeared on the show for the second time with a company update one year later. Their sales have grown tremendously, their web traffic jumped 1000x, and they are expanding into two new collaborations.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner for me has been the fact that I am a solopreneur, and so I have to do everything - from IT to project management to business development. I am learning how best to delegate to a variety of subcontractors, which is helping me scale my business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know what you do, why you do it, and what makes you different than others in your industry.
  2. Find a network of other business owners, colleagues, coaches, etc., that you trust - you need people to talk to, share ideas, and find best practices.
  3. Get help - understand your strengths and those things you don't do so well, and get help where you need it.
