Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Fiona Harbour, located in Guelph, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I use creativity, mindfulness, and self-care techniques to help us manage stress better, increase our sense of wellbeing and deepen our connection to our inner essence, allowing us to be more fully present for ourselves and our loved ones.

Tell us about yourself

Currently, my recordings of my guided meditations and journal prompts, along with the accompanying PDF formats, are available to you when you join Blisspot.

I also have an Etsy shop with printable PDFs, including a guided meditation 21-day journal and a self-care planner/journal available. And I have a 12-week Creativity and Mindfulness course too. My customers are interested in personal development, self-care, creativity, and mindfulness. They would like to begin or pick up their meditation and or creativity practices again, and are looking to increase their sense of wellbeing, manage their stress levels, and re-connect with themselves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I was about 16 years old, in a high school world religions class., the teacher included a section on mindfulness and meditation techniques. He taught us a simple meditation, and he brought in the school principal, who took us through some yoga poses. We did yoga to the music Morning Has Broken by Cat Stevens. I continued reading, studying, and practicing meditation and mindfulness. It brought me great comfort, and I kept up my practice all through my late teens and my twenties through my first period of self-employment and then later on to university, where I studied art. Later still, during my time in the corporate world from my late twenties onwards, at times, I faced long hours, a heavy workload, and exhaustion. I remember vividly when I was heading for corporate career woman burnout. My daily mindfulness practice saved me again, and I also began some creative activities that I had previously let go of; I recovered with a better sense of wellbeing, better ability to manage stress, got sick a lot less, and felt so much better than I had before. To me, my daily mindfulness and creativity practice has made all the difference, and I now work to help others. That’s a bit of my story about how I got started meditating, how my practice has continued, the difference it has made to me, and why I now use creativity and mindfulness techniques to help others.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The first person that I helped. I had told myself that even if I was able to help one person, it would be worth it. When I was able to help my first client, I was thrilled to bits!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

There are many hardships and challenges, but if you choose a business that you love, then it will be more than just work. Ideally, it will be a calling. And you will enjoy your entrepreneurial journey.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Be authentic and choose something that you love, including the behind-the-scenes day-to-day work. Spend time consistently relationship building. Depending on your situation, you may be able to keep your day job while also having your business, which will take a lot of the financial pressure off, at least for the first while, and you may enjoy doing both, whatever works best for your situation. Enjoy!
