Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in financial services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Josiah Aston, Founder of Financial Hope Services, located in Elk Grove, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I coach people to better stewardship so they can reach their financial goals. This involves them learning to budget effectively and consistently, getting clear on the steps to reach their goals, making career and money decisions, setting financial boundaries and communication expectations, prioritizing the right things, and holding themselves accountable. My customers are smart, talented, hard-working people that are wondering why their money disappears as fast as it comes in.

Tell us about yourself

I started this business in response to seeing so many people struggle with their finances while trying to make good decisions for their lives and families. My wife and I were in a similar situation when we got married, with over $200,000 of debt between us. We figured out how to get on the same page and make progress, and I wanted to help others do the same.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I went full-time a year and a half after starting the business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You have to be willing to do uncomfortable and inconvenient things. You can't say, "oh, that's not me;" you're limiting the possibilities.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Throw your hat over the fence, then climb the fence and run after it. In other words, make small commitments that force action to follow up on those commitments.
  2. Get connected with the right people that can help you uncover your blind spots.
  3. Always make time for dreaming, setting goals, prioritizing, and time-blocking.
