What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a consulting firm for businesses owned by healthcare professionals. We help business owners break down barriers to business building and achieve business goals through comprehensive business assessments, strategic planning, 1:1 guidance and support, and practical resources.

Tell us about yourself

I was born into a family of entrepreneurs. I started learning about business while working in my family business starting at the age of 13. I still do this work to this day. I knew I wanted to own a business since high school. I went into nursing because I wanted to help people, and I knew I would eventually be able to start a nursing-related business. I took every opportunity I had in the workplace to learn more, including professional development opportunities, mentorship programs, and participating on committees in the workplace and in the community. I earned my master's in nursing administration so I could learn more about running a healthcare business. By the time I finished my master's program, I knew I wanted to start a healthcare consulting business. Knowing that I can see solutions to the problems in healthcare that can make a difference motivates me to do my work every day. On the one hand, everywhere I turn, I see healthcare professionals and consumers complaining about the healthcare system. On the other hand, I see healthcare professionals starting businesses with much-needed services that could fill the gaps and fix the problems of the healthcare system.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far is making it through the first 3 years of building the business from scratch. Seeing my vision come to life is very rewarding.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are so many requirements to build a business properly, and you have to prioritize what is most important at each moment when it seems like everything is important. Then there are the things that you are not good at or don't enjoy doing that you have to do. Everything really depends on you when you are a business owner. Even when you have a team, everything ultimately falls on the business owner to put all the pieces together and maintain them.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start with your big vision and break it down into goals and actionable steps.
  2. Don't stop. Building a business is hard, but the only way you can truly fail is if you stop trying.
  3. Don't try to do it alone. Seek help with the things you are not proficient in and surround yourself with people who have accomplished what you want to accomplish.
