Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tom Bacon, Owner of Fetch Pet Hotel, located in Pilot Point, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We launched Fetch Pet Hotel on May 1st, 2021, after moving from Oregon to Texas. Fetch is a small dog boarding facility providing 5-star services to our clientele. Our customers live locally, but some come as far as Odessa to board their beloved furbabies here.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a lifelong marketing executive, having had my own Ad agency for a decade, working for a start-up to global companies. During the pandemic, we took time, like many did, to re-evaluate what we're doing in life, this property became available, and we made a move. My wife is a world-champion horse trainer, and Pilot Point is the epicenter of her universe.

I'm a lifelong animal lover and decided I wanted to start a kennel on the property, and that's what we have done. What motivates me? My wife, family, the guests we host and constantly strive and grow the business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think launching a new business during the pandemic might have given some pause, but not us. After 4-5 months, word got out, google search was dialed in, and we have been 90% full all of 2022. That's a huge compliment, our clients are our best advocates, and we're now getting ready to double the size of the kennel to meet the growing demand. All of this in just 16 months.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Personally, I love it. But you are responsible for everything 24/7, and it is a service business, so every interaction matters.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Is it something you are passionate about? It needs to be.
  2. Be conservative/realistic about the 1st year and what you can achieve.
  3. Have a solid support team in place: attorney, CPA, maybe an advisor or mentor.
