Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ash Tamber, Founder of Feral Blue, located in Sandston, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a jeweler and astrological consultant. For years I've been silversmithing and creating one-of-a-kind or limited production work, but lately, I have started incorporating astrological consulting in order to create custom amulets for my clients to achieve specific goals. My work is not limited to jewelry. I also make accessories for rituals, such as Zippos or incense and joint containers. So my customers are all genders and usually middle-aged folks who want meaningful adornment.

Tell us about yourself

My family is full of metal workers. My grandfather worked in the steel mill, my dad was a machinist, and my stepdad was a welder. I believe my interest in silversmithing grew from those roots and really blossomed the first time I took a class. Astrology was passed down to me through my mom from my grandmother. My motivation is freedom of self-expression and having a flexible schedule. I've always wanted to be my own boss.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is the small things. Every time someone tells me they wear or use my work every single day, shares a story about how meaningful a piece is to them, or sends me a heartfelt paragraph, it feels like I'm doing my job correctly.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me is the emotional rollercoaster that comes with owning a creative business. Some days are amazing, and others are a struggle, but in the end, it is always exciting.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Prepare yourself financially, so you have a cushion just in case.
  2. Don't listen to the fear...if it doesn't work out, you can always find something conventional again, but you might not always have the chance to take the leap.
  3. Keep good track of your finances from day one, so you can track your growth and pay your taxes appropriately.
