Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sylvia North, Consulting Dietitian of Fearless Nutrition, located in Auckland, New Zealand.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a dietitian in private practice. I help people improve their health with nutrition and lifestyle strategies. Clients come to me for weight loss, gut/digestive problems, and hormonal imbalances - among many other chronic health conditions where lifestyle strategies can make a big difference.

Tell us about yourself

I first got interested in nutrition as a teenager and went on to study nutrition at university. That naturally progressed from a bachelor's to a master's in nutrition and dietetics. I started consulting soon after graduating with my dietetics qualification. I was adamant that I wanted to work privately as opposed to taking a conventional clinical role. The main reason for this was that I had a real drive to work individually with clients and offer personalised advice. I have the flexibility to do this in a private setting. Knowing that I can make a positive impact in the interactions I have with clients is a huge privilege. That's what motivates me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest to date has been completing my Ph.D. while maintaining my private practice. After having gone through that process, I can use my knowledge base to further enhance what I can offer and make a bigger impact.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It never stops, really. You manage your own time. It's a privilege, really, but it's hard to allow yourself to take time out when you own there are always things you can be doing.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Sometimes you need to remind yourself of the positive impact you're having. If you're following the desire inside you, then you will always find the drive and energy to keep moving forward.
  2. Connect with others with expertise/experience in the industry. We can all learn from each other.
