Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in professional development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Farah Laurent, Founder of Farah Laurent International Nurse Coach LLC., located in Cranford, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Farah Laurent International Nurse Coach LLC offers top-notch career guidance to ensure Nurses level up and land their dream specialty position! Offering tailored resume, cover letter, interview preparation, education courses, 1-1 coaching, and group coaching programs that help you stand out from the crowd and be a BADASS NURSE! My clients range from nursing students and new graduate nurses to experienced nurses.

Tell us about yourself

In nursing school, I was told by my nursing instructor that I would never be an Emergency Nurse! I ignored her, of course, and landed my dream position in the Emergency Department before I even graduated! I went on to get my master’s degree in nursing education, six board certifications, and held various nursing positions in both Canada and the US, ranging from ED Staff Nurse, Travel Nurse, Charge Nurse, Educator, Adjunct Faculty, and leadership positions such as the Director of Education.

I naturally would always fall into the role of mentor and coach for many nurses throughout my nursing career. I then saw a huge need and problem that I could solve with my wealth of experience. When I was a new nurse, I did not have a person or outlet from which I could seek direction or any career guidance. What motivates me each day is to empower nurses to follow their dreams and not limit themselves within just the nursing world. My mission is to open up nurses' eyes to the endless possibilities, reach their fullest potential, and make an impact. It is my job to push them out of their comfort zone and step into their zone of genius!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have coached over 20 new graduate nurses to land their specialty dream position in less than one year. Making my clients happy and seeing them accomplish their goals is truly rewarding! I am the proud host of a Podcast and LinkedIn live show entitled “The Nursing Dose with Farah.”

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a new business owner and a nursepreneur/solopreneur is learning the business side of things and balancing it all out with my personal life. It is possible to do if you prioritize.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get a mentor; in fact, get multiple mentors! A business coach/marketing coach, this, of course, is until you can start a team of your own. You need people who are already established and who have been in your shoes to help lead the way!
  2. Just START! Do it already! - take action as soon as today! The biggest misconception is that you need a lot of money to start a business! You do not, start small, but just start!
  3. Constantly learn - educate yourself and learn from everyone and all types of industries!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

What I do with my nurse clients is truly transformational because the common thread after working with me is that there is a notable increase in confidence and a significant shift in their mindset! My goal is to empower 10000 nurses to land their dream positions by 2025 and live their best life!
