Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Layn Chess, founder of Facet Seven Fitness, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

FACET SEVEN Fitness - a fitness playground created to eliminate gymtimidation and focus on teaching our clients about their bodies, so they have control of their health. We are a real fitness training facility without fake promises. An uncomplicated full-service gym that focuses on our clients' longevity — increasing lifespan and health span! We do this by bringing together all the conventional training equipment and some not so conventional, so our clients can literally train anything they want. FACET SEVEN is an acronym standing for Flexibility, Agility, Core, Endurance, Toning, & Strength. We believe that when you practice all six, you reach FACET SEVEN which is complete fitness. Our clients are focused on not just looking and feeling good today but taking measures to keep this level of health and wellness for a very long lifetime. A gym as it should be.

Tell us about yourself

I was in a serious accident where I lost 80% of the function of my right arm. After becoming fascinated by how the body would adapt to training during recovery, I decided to help people regain whatever function they may have lost over the years of bad habits or injuries like mine. Every day I see people light up when they hit a PR or learn a new exercise, which energizes me to show up each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to keep two gyms alive through and post Covid.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing people and expectations.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Replace yourself or get replaced. Everything you do should be a system you’ve thought through, and you could pass on to someone else. If you don’t, someone else will, and you’ll be replaced.
  2. You’re only as good as your tools, get good tools and constantly sharpen them
  3. Don't force things to happen. Lay the dominoes the best you can, and when you hit a wall, just build around it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Know your skills and your weaknesses. Then put both those in the right spots. Remember to do the same with your team and know where everyone fits. The rest will begin to happen.
