Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachelle Calingasan, Founder and CEO of FaceBoz Consulting Inc., located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At FaceBoz Consulting Inc., we provide business consulting and development, training, coaching, mentoring, and national conference support in the Medical Aesthetics Industry. Our services cater to Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Nurses who are looking to support their individual skill sets as well as build and expand their business operations. We provide support to medical conferences and schools nationally with their injectable programs and workshops. We also have FaceStudio, a boutique practice where we specialize in providing non-surgical treatments and procedures for patients.

Tell us about yourself

I am a Registered Nurse in Ontario (for 22 years) and have a love for all things wellness, beauty, fashion, and health. I was a makeup artist for Toronto Fashion Week for many years while working as a nurse at the Hospital For Sick Children. I was able to bring my love for medicine, science, and beauty when I started working in medical aesthetics and plastic surgery 17 years ago. I started teaching doctors and nurses how to perform Botox and dermal filler injections 15 years ago, and for 11 years, I worked as a National Educator for a pharmaceutical company that made competitor products to Botox and Juvederm.

What motivated me to start my own company was seeing the gaps in existing medical aesthetics practices, new injectors coming into the industry (they didn’t have a lot of business training/background), and the limitations pharmaceutical companies provided to support these practitioners. So I created solutions to fill in those gaps to help support practitioners. I also opened The FaceStudio, located in Port Credit in Mississauga, to be able to treat my own patients and further expand and cultivate my own skills.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far is being able to connect with customers I’ve known for a decade and a half and help support their business needs and actually see them grow. I feel proud and grateful to be a part of their journey and success. So when I see my customers grow, I feel like their accomplishments are also mine.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is the emotional and mental roller coaster of the unknown. I came from a corporate environment where my income was steadily coming in per month. As a business owner, you have to work harder to ensure the activities and efforts you do yield an ROI without compensating for your integrity. Being genuine and authentic is really important to me, and so I want to provide the best service I can to my customers and patients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your craft. Take the time to educate yourself and gain experience with everything related to what you do and your business. Even the smallest activities and tasks that aren’t in your ‘job description’ are important if they are related to your business.
  2. Expect the emotional and mental roller coaster ride of panic, fear, doubt, excitement, joy, happiness, etc. It’s always scary doing your own thing, but believing in yourself and having a solid business plan (which you may revisit often) with achievable goals will help you get through this roller coaster.
  3. Value your customers. Customer service is key with any business, whether it’s products you sell or services. Customers who have a positive and great experience will always come back for more.
