Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kim Bouldin, owner of FabYOUlous Fitness, located in Westerville, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

FabYOUlous Fitness is a small, by-appointment-only fitness studio for women in Westerville, OH. We help busy Westerville (and surrounding area) women over 35 years old feel better and have more energy without extreme rules and restrictions so they can be empowered to live their best lives. We use the “FabFit Method,” which is made up of 3 key components: FabFit Success Blueprint, sustainable habit-based fitness, nutrition and lifestyle guidance, and elite accountability coaching. Contrary to what many believe, you do not have to feel like you got the snot beat out of you to get a great workout and reach your goals. Consistent workouts, at a level appropriate for you and your goals, paired with habit-based nutrition and lifestyle guidance, are the secrets to success.

Tell us about yourself

I have always had an interest in health and fitness, but after the birth of our second child, I decided to pursue a career as a personal trainer. I was training to run a half marathon and exercising at our local big box gym. I always felt uncomfortable in the gym…so much so that there were times when I would skip certain exercises to avoid the possibility of looking like a fool. As I went through the personal training curriculum, I decided that I wanted to help other women like me who avoided the gym (or exercise altogether) because they were scared, intimidated, or uncomfortable.

Once I completed my certification, I found a small local studio for women and began seeing clients. Over the past ten years, I’ve continued to create a safe space for women to exercise, eliminating one of the biggest obstacles between women and their goals. I opened my own space in 2018, giving FabYOUlous Fitness its own brick & mortar location. We’ve grown so much that we’re in the process of taking on additional space with hopes of opening the doors to the expansion by June 1, 2022.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Navigating the pandemic and continuing to grow each year despite the setbacks. It hasn’t always been a smooth road, especially with the shutdown in March 2020. We had just moved into a new space in January 2020 and were shut down for ten weeks beginning on March 16, 2020. Fortunately, I had just hired a business coach, and she was an integral part of our pivoting to Zoom training sessions while we were shut down. The first few weeks were really tough, but we kept on showing up, and so did our clients. We still hold Zoom sessions today and have worked with clients who don’t live close enough to visit our studio in person. This is the silver lining of the pandemic for the studio.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Learning to work smarter and not harder.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be prepared to work hard.
  2. Delegate/hire out tasks that take up time you could be spending moving the needle forward in your business growth. Things like admin, accounting, cleaning, etc.
  3. Time block your calendar/set boundaries and stick to them. This goes back to working smarter and not harder.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
