What's your business, and who are your customers?
I provide a high-skill lash extension service in a private room setting and retail quality lash-themed apparel like sleep masks, toques, and sweaters. I have more recently launched a course to train new lash artists and am developing online resources to help lash artists grow their businesses.
Tell us about yourself
I worked in corporate for close to a decade, burning out in the last two years. I picked up lash artistry as a side job to be able to have a creative outlet. I decided to make it my new full-time career after a round of layoffs at my corporate job. This has been the best move so far - I get to help women feel more confident and get to help others build a business to become then financially independent and with a skill that will never be taken from them.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I was able to grow my business full-time during the pandemic and have enough income to support myself. Now, I'm proud to have written a course and am ready to share it with others!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I think it depends on the person, but ultimately it comes down to mindset. You have to stay motivated through the ups and downs, remember your "why," and strive always to be better than yesterday. With scaling a business, it can also be hard to let go and let others help.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Take the time to think your business idea through and map it out - what does success mean, and how will you get there?
- Have the right marketing strategy in place for success.
- Make sure you have $ for a roof over your head and food.
