Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Kerman-Gutzmer, President of Everyday Yoga Escape, located in Geneva, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Everyday Yoga Escape, and it has expanded from live, online, and on-demand yoga and meditation into much more. I help people find their inner calm and change their lives with programs, classes and coaching focused on mind, body, and spirit. I combine mindset empowerment programs with energy healing techniques, yoga, mindfulness, and meditation for a unique approach to coaching and group programs. I work mostly with women who want to do it all, who are either well established in their careers or supermoms or transitioning into retirement or a new phase, and who want to improve their lives, find peace, and thrive by finding their own inner wisdom and inner calm.

Tell us about yourself

I started my career in the corporate world and became burnt out and knew there must be more to life than working 60-hour weeks. My husband began having some health problems, and my focus shifted as we navigated to figure out what could help him. We started meditating, and I started going to yoga classes frequently and learning about energy healing. He was going for physical therapy at the time, and I noticed that much of what he was doing was the same as what I was learning in my yoga classes. I saw the significant difference these things we're making in our lives and wanted to take a more proactive approach to our health and help others in the same way. I began to study personal development and the law of attraction, and I saw how these so seamlessly connected with yoga and energy healing to help people improve their lives in every way.

I'm motivated every day as I talk to my clients and hear that they are sleeping better, feeling less anxiety, and motivated to make changes that they want in their lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is hearing how my clients are improving their lives. Some are coming consistently to my yoga classes and feeling calmer and less anxious and having a ripple effect out to their families. Others are incorporating specific, quick energy healing techniques into their day that they learned to improve their health or their memory or to feel more focused and think more clearly. Some are going through coaching or programs with me and understanding that they can change their thoughts and feel better and attract good things into their lives, and are making big changes and finding new goals and purpose.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Marketing and talking about myself and everything behind the scenes - the hours spent preparing for workshops and classes, the time spent updating websites and writing newsletters, growing and expanding.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get coaching or mentoring. Mindset is as important as action.
  2. Get out and network - meet others in your field and complementary fields and help each other to learn and grow and find ways to collaborate.
  3. Just take the next step - one thing at a time; maybe your first step is getting certified in what you want to do. Do that! Maybe it's building a website or starting to post on social media to get the word out. Take it one step at a time, and just keep going!
