Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Neena McConnell, owner of Wallflower Events and Designs, located in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Wallflower Events and Designs is a Wedding and Event Planning Company with expanded services in Professional Floral Design and Event Décor. Our customers are anyone looking to get married or plan an event and people looking to gift or receive flowers on a monthly basis.

Tell us about yourself

I began in the floral industry 15 years ago, and my passion only grew from there. When I realized back in 2018 that every job and career opportunity ultimately led to being an event planner and floral designer, I knew I had to open my own business. People needed to see what I had to offer, and the world could always use a little more beauty. I offer a fresh approach and a keen sense of seeing the whole picture while finding and executing those little details that help make your event memorable and uniquely yours.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would have to say my biggest accomplishment was making the leap of faith and opening my business. Aside from thriving during a global pandemic and winning numerous awards in the Peterborough community. Seeing my clients happy at the end of the day truly makes my job worthwhile!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Many challenging things come with being a business owner. If I had to choose, I would say learning to say no. When you own a business and love what you do, it is often difficult to know what you need a break or when something isn't serving you the way you had hoped. Truthfully, this is a lesson I learn every day, and I've been teaching myself to take a step back and see the whole picture before jumping in headfirst.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Research all the businesses similar to the one you want to start, run and grow. Learn from these people; make them your allies. Understand that they are not competition and you can help one another.
  2. Don't wait until the "right time"; it doesn't exist. If you keep waiting, you might never do it.
  3. Never stop learning. Just because you've taken a course or two doesn't mean that you have all the skills necessary to flourish. Update your skills often; learn something new daily.
