Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in event planning but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephanie VandenBerg, Co-Owner of Events Inspired, located in San Diego, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are an event planning company specializing in weddings and corporate events. Our clients are couples planning their weddings as well as companies looking to plan corporate retreats and team-building events.
Tell us about yourself
Julia and I first met in the Interior Design program at San Diego State University, and after an event planning internship and a couple of years in the design field, we decided to start our own event planning company focusing on our project management and design expertise.
We really love looking at events from an experiential aspect and how guests will interact with the event space, design and decor, and flow of the event. Overall we are extremely dedicated to our clients and really pride ourselves on the friendships and relationships that come out of the planning and coordination process.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
There is a lot of pride in knowing that we are fully self-sufficient financially. This is, of course, one of the scarier parts of owning a business, but when you get to the point of knowing you have longevity and you're making it happen for yourself and your team, there's a great feeling of accomplishment and freedom.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Learning and figuring out what balance looks like for you. As a business owner, you want to give it your all, and most of the time, this comes with the sacrifice of time and energy. You will never "clock out" of your business, so learn to find that balance and trust others to help you as you continue to grow and delegate.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Determine your purpose. Once you know this, you'll always have it as your foundation and will be able to make decisions that are in alignment with your purpose.
- Don't get distracted by what others are doing. Follow your intuition and stay true to who you and your company are.
- Just go for it. You'll never fully be "ready," and you won't really know what works for you until you take the first step.
