Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Vanessa & Valentina Cafazzo, co-founders of Euro Desserts, located in North York, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a family-run business driven to make the world a sweeter place. We take our Italian heritage and add modern twists to the desserts we create.

Tell us about yourself

Our parents are the most driven people we know. They started this business over 30 years ago, and over the years, it evolved to what Euro Desserts is known of today. We (Vanessa & Valentina) wake up proud of what we do every morning. Although we just make desserts, the thought that one of our creations could put a smile on someone's face makes all our hard work worth it. We also strive to make our parents proud.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment for us is that we have a great following, and we have customers that continue to come back. It is one thing to create a product/ service, but when you know that what you are selling is so good enough for people to come back a second and third time, that is a true compliment and makes us feel great!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time Management. Many people don't realize that being a business owner is a full-time job and that even means having to work after business hours. There is always something to do, and it is very difficult to create a work-life balance.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

It's hard to name three, but if we had to choose three tips to tell someone, it is:

  1. To make sure you understand the financial part of your business- without a proper accountant or understanding what is coming in and out of your bank account, this could make or break your business.
  2. Social media is everything- our business changed overnight by posting a new product on social media. It is a great FREE tool that you can use to advertise, communicate with customers, and even network.
  3. Know your demographic- You want to make sure you know who your consumers are. Many times we created products that didn't do as well as we thought because it wasn't something that our customers were interested in. If you are someone who wants to start a business, think about who you want to sell to and go from there.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being a business owner requires hard work, heart, and thought. Don't be afraid to be different and try new things.
