Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelle Yule, owner of Euphoric Hair Boutique, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

EHB is a luxury chair rental salon in Calgary, Alberta. The salon environment and culture are very important for our stylists, who work best in a relaxed, friendly, and uplifting space. Our vibe is chill, and the passion for our craft is obvious and so inspiring to watch. When you love what you do, it really is the best, most positive energy to be around, and that's how we roll inside our salon.

Tell us about yourself

I am a hairstylist, an entrepreneur, a salon owner, a wife, and a mamma. I wear many different hats in this life, but my family is the proudest accomplishment and the biggest motivator.

I created EHB to help support other like-minded hairstylists that want to take their own small businesses to the next level. Chair Rental at EHB is that quintessential stepping stone in time. They'll really learn to become independent stylists and business owners at the same time but without the crazy overhead costs or responsibilities of solo salon ownership.

We help stylists with their social media posts, help curate their business brand, encourage setting those professional boundaries, help construct their ideal schedule and continue to be that cheerleader that we all need on the sidelines.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

After almost 15 years of renting a chair at various hair salons, the plan to get my vision out of my head and into fruition became a reality in 2018. It's been a roller coaster since opening the doors to EHB. I would have to say that the biggest accomplishment is watching an EHB Stylist grow professionally and personally while working as an independent stylist.

It's a proud moment to see their clientele base grow and their social media game heightened. It's cool to watch and see them unfold their knowledge and confidence in their ability to understand the business side of owning their own salon. I want the stylists to leave EHB ready to take that next step in their journey of salon ownership. With so many other amazing salons to choose from in our city, I am always proud of the stylists that choose to rent a chair at EHB and the clients that choose to follow their stylists.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

With a chair rental business model, it has been the hardest to find those perfect renters ever since the pandemic. I am looking for like-minded, already licensed stylists to complete our roaster of super talented artists.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You'll never really be ready... so enjoy the process and stay present.
  2. Write everything down to get it out of your head so that you can concentrate.
  3. Have FUN and try not to take yourself so seriously.
