Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Phree Finney-Durham, founder of Essence of Phreedom, located in Blacklick, OH, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Essence Of Phreedom, also known as E.O.P. Naturals. I create natural, holistic, vegan products that promote self-care and healing. My customers are those who are actively seeking a natural way to relax their bodies, calm their minds and heal their skin. They are conscious of the ingredients they inhale and absorb into their bodies from the products they use and want to do their part in protecting the Earth.
Tell us about yourself
I've been vegan for over twenty years, and as I did more research, I realized that the products I was using that were labeled natural had several additives that did not align with my vegan lifestyle and were potentially harmful to my health. Cocoa Butter was not just pure Cocoa Butter. It was a blend of items, some of which are harmful to your health. I wanted to create products that were authentic and a true representation of what the label says. Real products for real people just trying to live life as healthily as possible. I am motivated by the support I receive from my customers and community. I love hearing about the positive effects my products have had on those who have tried them. I am honored that they chose to take me along on their self-care journey. I feel that I am a reflection of those that I serve, so to see them happy makes me happy.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was perfecting my products to a superior quality. I experimented with different formulations and methods until I found what worked best. I now have a product that I am proud of and feel confident in selling to the public. Having the ability to market my products with pride makes the long days and sleepless nights well worth it!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is finding a balance between work and home. Running a business on your own is very stressful and time-consuming. Finding time to pause and enjoy family and friends sometimes feels impossible. When you have orders to fill, ideas you want to experiment with, or are burdened with the financial woes of trying to grow your business, it doesn't leave much space for anything else, mentally or financially.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a marketing plan and budget.
- Be willing to sacrifice your time, money, and sanity (sometimes).
- Do something you're passionate about that will bring you a sense of fulfillment.
