Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Procini, Founder of Escape From Emotional Eating, located in Philadelphia, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Escape From Emotional Eating is here to help high-achieving women heal the roots of their emotional eating so they can embody their full potential. Instead of using food to numb, I teach them how to process their feelings and get back in touch with themselves so their mind, body, and soul can fully serve their true calling and purpose. My work is very different from other emotional eating help out there and goes way beyond the surface conversation of "eat this, not that."

Tell us about yourself

Once upon a time, I was an emotional eater and didn't know it. I didn't have hundreds of pounds to lose, and I didn't have a full-blown eating disorder. I didn't fit into those extremes, and because of that, I struggled to find the right support that would help me heal the deeper issues I had with food. After 932 hours of therapy, becoming a Certified Holistic Health Counselor, and teaching fitness classes round the clock. It was clear that the answers I was seeking were not to be found in fitness and nutrition. That's when I dedicated myself to investigating and researching every nook and cranny of my relationship with food - physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual. I discovered what I now call today, The 4 Roots Of Emotional Eating, which was the beginning of my freedom from food and the foundation of what I currently teach in my Escape From Emotional Eating Programs, retreats, and workshops. Being 100% free from my compulsions with food, I help others who do not fit into the stereotypes or extremes. Those who recognize that using food to cope is holding them back and want to be free, so their mind, body, and soul are of true service to their heart's calling.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd say celebrating the 11th anniversary of the start of Escape From Emotional Eating!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing fear and anxiety. At the same time, the practice isn't hard (and I'm so grateful to have healed my relationship with food, so I'm not eating my feelings, especially when things get hard). I think it's the commitment to managing fear and anxiety CONSISTENTLY as a business owner that is the challenge. I've learned that there never really is an " arrival point." There will always be new levels and new challenges we have to face. Learning to get comfortable with being uncomfortable is an ongoing practice and process for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Follow your heart, trust your gut, and don't give up - especially when things get hard or messy.
