Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ernest Todd, co-owner of Feast in a Basket, located in Washington, DC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a full-service caterer. We do events from intimate dinners for two to large events of 500. What makes us different is our specialty product, "Feast in a Basket," a keepsake basket with a meal curated by the customer from our menu suggestions.

Tell us about yourself

I have always loved to cook. Some people say it is what they do. For me, it's who I am.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel our biggest accomplishment besides longevity is the fact we can say we have customers who have been with us the whole ride. Others may leave their company, but they don't leave us.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having so many balls in the air at one time and putting out fires.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start: Don't keep it a secret. Tell everyone. Learn to say it with confidence and ease.
  2. Run: Keep learning, stay current on trends in your industry.
  3. Growth: Look at new opportunities. Sometimes you have to go out on a limb; that is where the fruit is.
