Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erin Taylor, Founder of Erin Taylor, LLC, located in Lumberton, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a parent coach, and I help parents to better understand, connect with, and communicate with their children to create more peaceful and joyful homes and families.

Tell us about yourself

Since I was 11 years old, I have known that I wanted to work with families. I was blessed to be raised by incredible parents who gave me an idyllic childhood. As I grew, I looked around and realized that not everyone was as fortunate as I was to have such a great childhood. I knew then and there that I wanted to dedicate my life to helping parents give their children the childhoods they deserve. And I have worked to do just that every day since.

Each day, I wake up energized and excited to begin my sessions with my clients. I know the long-lasting impact I am making into the future by helping them to have a deeper, more connected, and more joyful relationship with their children. The ripple effect of this work is inestimable.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is the existence of my coaching practice! Having come from a background of being an employee my entire adult life, I had no idea what it would take to run a business. I just knew I wanted to open my own practice and help families in my own way. I made mistakes, learned from them, researched, grew, made connections with others, and helped others in return. Many businesses fail in the first five years, but I have been in practice for almost nine years now, and business has never been better!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the most challenging things that come with being a business owner is all the "hats" you have to wear. I remember when I first opened my business, I had no idea how much there was to learn. The more I learned (about websites, marketing, accounting, etc.), the more I realized I didn't know yet!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be ready to put your heart and soul into your business venture.
  2. Realize that there is going to be a LOT that you will need to learn and become proficient at that goes beyond the scope of the reason you originally wanted to start a business.
  3. Become a master of your time. As soon as you can afford to do so, figure out what you can "farm out" in order to free up your time to do the business that you wanted to do initially when you had the idea.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Starting a business is a lot like birthing a child. It will take loads of time and patience and love and nurturing. And lots and lots of learning. But the rewards and fruits of your labor will be so worth it!
