Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erin Alarcon, Owner of Erin Alarcon Mediation, located in Woburn, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Erin Alarcon Mediation is a mediation and legal consulting business. We work with couples, organizations, and businesses to help them minimize and resolve conflicts through mediation and other alternative dispute resolution processes. We also consult with small and mid-sized businesses, non-profit organizations, and faith-based organizations on business- and employment-related practices and policies.

Our customers include divorcing couples, employers and employees, landlords and tenants, and other business owners.

Tell us about yourself

I began mediating in 2009 while still working as a full-time litigator/trial attorney, and in 2016 I launched my private mediation practice. I enjoy meeting and engaging with people, facilitating conversations about their varied perspectives, and helping them explore potential solutions to resolve a dispute.

I am motivated by lightbulb moments when two disputing parties who thought the resolution was impossible to realize there is a potential solution and way forward.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Coming out of the pandemic stronger than before and even doubling business income is my biggest accomplishment as a business owner.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Keeping up with the administrative minutiae of owning a business has been challenging. Having scheduling and strategy for responding to e-mails, maintaining documentation, and sending invoices have been key.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a business plan.
  2. Find and nurture relationships with mentors in your specific field and in business/entrepreneurialism. (Be a mentor, too!).
  3. Be flexible.
