Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erica Mouch, Owner of Erica Mouch Nutrition, located in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a private practice food therapy and nutrition business. My customers are clients who want food to be a positive element in their life, want peace in their relationship with food and their bodies, and don't want to start another diet. I also train healthcare professionals in a counseling style called Motivational Interviewing.

Tell us about yourself

I first started working on my business when I realized I wanted a hybrid model of training healthcare professionals and seeing clients 1:1 - so I created it! The first six months were incredible times of learning about myself and what it's like to step out on your own. Incredibly hard and so worth every tear and drop of sweat.

What motivates me daily is seeing the shifts in my clients as they start to have peace with food and go from being afraid of keeping certain foods in their house to having them in the house and forgetting about them. Similarly, seeing clinicians experience a shift in their practice and having better results by putting effort in a different way - these are the elements that keep me motivated.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building my business from the ground up to matching my previous job's salary in 8 months.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Doing it alone is one of the hardest elements of being a business owner (extrovert here!). Networking groups and communities like Subkit are lifesavers.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a way to stay motivated and optimistic. Maybe find many ways to do it.
  2. Don't take things personally. Even though you are the face of the business, it is rarely about you.
  3. Talk to people outside of your field/business area. Some of my longest sustained business relationships are with folks who have nothing to do with my field.
