Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Eren Angiolini, Colourist, Illustrator & Character Designer, located in the United Kingdom.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a professional comic colourist and fantasy illustrator. I work for some of the world's most famous comic publishers (DC -yes, those who publish Batman!-, Image Comics, Dark Horse, Titan Comics), and I draw artwork for tabletop games and private clients.

Tell us about yourself

I have always had a passion for art and drawing since I was a kid. But my academic career is in foreign languages, another big love of mine. Growing up in Italy, where art is admired but not really considered a viable career, I never thought drawing and colouring could become my job. So I studied languages and kept art as a hobby, doing occasional work here and there. Until I had the chance to give it a shot and do it professionally. So in 2017, I took a leap of faith and started working on my first comic series and... I have never stopped since. I love my job with all my heart, and -even if it's a really tough industry full of stress and obstacles- it brings me a lot of joy every day!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing up, I was an avid comic reader: I was surrounded by my favourite superheroes and fantastic adventures. Now my name is on the cover of some of those same comics I used to love as a kid. I never thought I'd get here: it's an incredible feeling!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Finding a way to be independent in a market that is very unstable and full of difficulties: most art jobs are very badly paid and require incredible amounts of work, with a lot of stress. So I'm very proud of the work I've done so far in building my career and having reached a place that allows me to select the projects I'm really passionate about, so I can give it my best without compromising my health and my work-life balance.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First of all: be patient and work hard. It takes a lot of time, trial, and error, so don't expect things to happen for you magically. Secondly: listen to those who have more experience, study, and be humble. When given feedback by people who know more, listen and learn, and don't let your pride stop you. And finally: enjoy the path! If you're not finding any joy in the road you've chosen for yourself, you won't be able to put in the necessary work and dedication. Find the right path for you and make it your own!
