Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in podcasting but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alex Wait, Founder & Producer of Epics Productions, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is called Epics Productions, and we produce podcasts for individuals or organizations with stories to tell. I believe that the foundation of hate and discrimination in our world is a lack of understanding of those who are different from ourselves, and hearing their story humanizes them in a way that helps us to better understand what they are going through, leading to a positive impact on the world.

With shrinking attention spans, podcasts hold a unique place in our world as content is a rare medium that is growing in popularity but also keeping listeners engaged for long enough to tell your story and create a relationship with your cause. Podcasts are everywhere, and anyone can do them, but that doesn't make them easy. I will help you or your organization produce a professional podcast for your cause.

Tell us about yourself

I got burnt out working a career in non-profits and lost two jobs during the first year of COVID. My desire to do social justice work and a reflection of myself through the lens of my ADHD led me to start my podcast, sharing people's stories. That led me to fall in love with podcasting and the medium. Combined with the loss of my 2nd job during COVID, this led me to start Epics Productions to produce podcasts for people and organizations with stories to share.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was landing my first client and taking my first business trip to do live recordings at their national conference. Those two moments took away so much of the fear and doubt that I had and started to build my confidence in myself and my business.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I have a wife and two boys at home, depending on me. Starting a new business is terrifying when I have mouths to feed and beds to keep warm. Making the decision to start a business has been hard for me because I have ADHD and struggle with daily anxiety, loss of motivation, and many other side effects.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Go to someone you trust to give you honest feedback and tell them your idea. If they give you criticism, listen and trust yourself to know if you need to make changes.
  2. Don't be afraid to ask for help. I got my first client because I told my mentor what I was doing and asked him for referrals.
  3. Do what you need to do to start now! For me, I was too scared to start my business and put pressure on my idea to provide for my family right away. I got a job serving at a restaurant on evenings and weekends to make ends meet while I build my business up. That doesn't mean that I don't believe in my business, just that the potential of failure having an impact on my family was too big of a risk and impacted my confidence. Now I know I can provide for right now and build my business to one day take care of our future.
