Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jeremy Burrill, owner of Fiddlehead Casket Company, located in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I make flat-packed, eco-friendly pine casket kits that ship to customers across North America. The kit can be assembled in 30 minutes by anyone, regardless of experience, using only the included mallet.

Tell us about yourself

I started Fiddlehead Casket Company in 2016 to fill a need for a casket with a simple aesthetic that was environmentally conscious and easier on the budget than traditional caskets on offer at funeral homes. The casket kit was launched in 2018 to reach customers outside of the local area. I am motivated to help people plan and achieve the kind of funeral that aligns with their values.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The feedback I receive from families that have used the casket kit, saying it was the perfect thing for their situation, is a great honor. The Fiddlehead casket kit was recently certified by the Green Burial Council. It helps consumers sift through the "greenwashing" that happens with many products as they try to capitalize on the growing trend for environmentally friendly options.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There are many hats to wear as a business owner. Often that means prioritizing and putting some things on the back burner. It can be overwhelming at times, but it helps to take a minute, formulate a plan and get to work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't waste your time and energy worrying about things that may not come to pass. If it's a problem that needs to be dealt with, then do it, but otherwise, stay focused. You can get caught up in "what ifs" that will never materialize.
  2. Watch out for burnout. It's important to recharge from time to time.
  3. Keep learning all the time.
