Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Jason Selk, Founder of Enhanced Performance, located in St. Louis, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am in the business of helping people. I have been incredibly fortunate in my life and in my career to work with and learn from some of the most successful people to walk the planet. I’ve spent my career working to become the best at what I do, helping others to become the best at what they do with great success.

Tell us about yourself

Growing up, both of my parents were in the helping profession. We’d spend our Thanksgiving each year going into the community to help others. Helping people was always our focus as a family. My career has been about developing better and better ways to help people improve their lives. Throughout graduate school and beyond, I poured myself into the research surrounding success, happiness, and performance. What has always separated me from other coaches is that I do not ask my clients to implement anything that is not backed by research. There is frankly so much being taught out there that has not been proven to be effective—in fact, much of it has been shown to be counterproductive. I love what I do, and my clients experience results.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I’ve worked with World Series champions, Olympic gold medalists, CEOs, and the like, but what gives me the greatest sense of accomplishment is seeing people’s happiness reach new levels. Committing to the tools and training for developing a Relentless Solution Focus has been proven to increase longevity by up to 14 years—and significantly increase health, happiness, and success. I can’t think of anything more important to a successful life than those things, and I am fortunate to be able to teach others how to achieve it. My books allow me to get these tools to so many more people than I would be able to reach myself.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The consistency of executing the important things is one of the things that sets apart the highly successful. It is normal to allow the noise of the day-to-day to interfere with what is most important each day, but the greats ALWAYS get the most important things done. This is harder than it may appear. One of my favorite quotes by Coach John Wooden is that “It’s the little things done well on a consistent basis that cause greatness.”

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Prioritize, evaluate effectively, and mentally prepare for each day.

Prioritization is the most underrated skill of those who are most successful. If you can get in the habit each day of identifying your three most important tasks and commit to completing those first, you will put yourself ahead of a significant portion of your competition.

Second, you’ve got to be evaluating yourself effectively. Let me be clear, we are all evaluating ourselves constantly throughout the day, but if you are not consciously evaluating yourself in an effective way, your default will be to focus on where you are falling short of expectations. This has a significant effect on self-confidence, which has a significantly negative effect on performance.

Lastly, if you are not mentally prepared each day, you are falling short of your potential. I teach a proven and effective mental workout and evaluation system in Chapter 9 of Relentless Solution Focus that takes less than two minutes per day to complete. The great news is that developing the mental toughness for success does not take a lot of time each day, but it does take consistency. Remember, you are worth it.
