Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Butcher, Owner of Em's Clay & Craft, located in San Antonio, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Em's Clay & Craft is a woman-owned small business that focuses on creating handcrafted Polymer Clay Accessories. I have an amazing customer base of friends, family, and an incredibly sweet internet community who continues to support my small business from all across the world!

Tell us about yourself

I am a Christian, Wife, Momma, and Artist who loves to create unique wearable art! I primarily make Earrings but have shifted to including handmade Necklaces & Rings as well. I started my business after giving birth to my first daughter, Evelyn. She was born at the start of COVID, and I was having a hard time postpartum adjusting to all the life changes that were happening. I started to look for a creative outlet and stumbled across Polymer Clay on a Youtube video. I hit the ground running from there and officially started my business at the start of 2021.

I am about to give birth to my second daughter, Anna-Marie! Her due date is December 5th! I thank God daily for my amazing family and support system. I'm so thankful to be able to be a stay-at-home momma with my girls and run this amazing business! It truly is incredible to see how much my business has grown in this short amount of time and be able to show my daughters that with hard work, anything is possible!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment would be building an incredible online base of amazing friends and supporters! Prior to my business, I didn't have any form of social media, but now I have over 30,000 followers from all over the world cheering me on!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a small business owner is definitely trying to juggle home life and work life together. I take care of my home & family throughout the day, and during nap/bedtimes, I try to work on my business as much as possible. You can get burnt out quickly, and it's important to try to manage a good balance between the two.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My top three tips would be if you're thinking about starting a business, just start! Be consistent; it can be hard, especially in the beginning. Lastly, social media is your best friend when looking to promote your business. Learning how to make high-quality video/photo content is crucial to promoting a business!
