Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Missy Wolfman, Founder of Empowerment Psychology, located in Auckland, New Zealand.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a Clinical Psychologist based in New Zealand, and I provide assessment and therapy for children and adults. My passion is to empower people to thrive in their lives. My areas of expertise are neurodevelopmental conditions like ADHD & ASD for children and adults and maternal mental health. My customers are children and adults living in New Zealand. I also offer an online course for mums all around the world on "How to reduce stress, get more time and joy."

Tell us about yourself

I'm always curious about learning about different cultures and different ways of living and thinking. From a young age, I've traveled extensively with my parents, and in particular, my father was always encouraging me to wonder and be curious about how people think. I was a very shy and introverted child, but I grew up to be very extroverted and get a lot of energy from being with people.

Being a Clinical Psychologist is my dream job! I get to listen, be with people, and help them thrive in their own way, and this is an amazing privilege to have. I started my private practice as I want to have more freedom and flexibility with how many clients I see, what types of clients I see, and, to be honest, more face-to-face time and less admin compared to working in the hospital/public sector in New Zealand.

I also started my business when I had my kids, as I wanted the flexibility and freedom to choose when and how much I spend time with them. I love being with people, getting to know new clients, and hearing their progress in their lives. What motivates me each day is the stories I get to hear and, best of all, the progress I see in my clients' lives. It's amazing to feel that I have made some difference in someone's life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting and growing my business is my biggest accomplishment! I started my business on the side while I was working for the public sector, and then I started contracting for a couple of clinics. I decided to take the plunge last year to launch my own private practice and start my company, and I don't have any regrets.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Freedom and flexibility often mean there is no structure or pathway for a business owner. So the hardest thing for me is to figure out what's next in terms of my business. I have been working with a business mentor for the past 3 months, and that has been helpful.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find your support crew - people who are cheering for you and supporting you professionally and personally.
  2. Work on your money mindset - if you don't want to work on your money mindset and have difficulty invoicing clients, chasing outstanding payments, etc., then running a business will be challenging!
  3. Work on your other mindset - my favourite mottos are "Progress, not perfection," "Everything is figureoutable," and "Simplify to amplify."
