Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with MaryEllen Giombetti, owner of EMPOWERED BY MEG, located in Framingham, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

EMPOWERED BY MEG offers life and professional development coaching services for individuals and teams and specializes in stress management, career, emotional intelligence, transition, and well-being. I am also an End of Life Doula and help folks manage grief and end-of-life concerns.

Tell us about yourself

I decided to start EMPOWERED BY MEG in 2009 after experiencing burnout from years of working in corporate settings and the public health space. My mission, then and now, has always been to empower people to reimagine how they think and act and build a culture of care. Every day I am motivated by the endless possibilities we have to change not only our own path but the path of someone else just by reconsidering what we have always done.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Celebrating 14 years as a business owner is probably my biggest accomplishment and the one I am most proud of. 50% of small businesses fail after five years, and 65% fail after ten years. So far, I'm beating the odds, and I plan to keep doing that.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Trying to maintain a "work-life balance." As a business owner, I am responsible for all aspects of my business. When something needs to get done, it's me who needs to do it. I don't have the luxury of having a team or budget behind me to execute big business needs like marketing, lead generation, etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get crystal clear on your mission and ideal client/target market.
  2. View every opportunity as a valuable lesson/teachable moment, even the not-so-great ones. Don't stop asking yourself, "What can I learn from this?"
  3. Believe in yourself.
