What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is actually four businesses. I’m a serial entrepreneur and graphic designer by trade. I own a bookstore (Dog Ear Books), a coffee shop (Retro Roasts), and a retro arcade (The Garage Arcade). The fourth is my design business, The Brainstorm Agency.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve always wanted to be more involved with my community. I began my first business to provide graphic design solutions to my area in 2014, and ever since then have been finding new and exciting ways to get more involved. But also to provide experiences for the community to engage with each other in new ways.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My employees. I don’t know how I’ve managed it, but I have assembled the most amazing team that thrives on the values of community, kindness, and equality.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Planning my day. Each day I set out with a handful of things I need to do, but the universe has other plans and throws all sorts of things at me. Being a problem solver is an absolute must.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Go into it knowing it will not turn out how you want - but somehow will end up exactly what you need.
  2. Find someone to discuss business ideas and thoughts with that can say “no” to you. You need a “no” person to keep you in check.
  3. Have fun. Outside forces will absolutely try to crush you, just do your best and carry on.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Always live your story. Don’t try to appear put together and calm if you’re not. Be messy and frazzled. At the end of the day, YOU are your business. People connect with that and want to support that.
