Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Kessler, Founder of Emily Kessler Meditation, located in Santa Cruz, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a meditation business. I teach people how to meditate via my signature 3-session virtual course called "Meditation for Busy Humans." I also offer 1-1 Meditation & Mindset Coaching as well as corporate meditation sessions and courses. My customers are busy human beings who want to feel less stressed, anxious, and overwhelmed so they can more easily tap into rest, relaxation, and joy.

Tell us about yourself

I have worked my entire career in the music industry - managing artists, marketing national tours, and producing big music festivals. A random 6-month solo trip to Asia in 2015 and an introduction to meditation there revealed a calm, centered, and grounded side of myself that I'd never encountered before. Upon returning to the states, and the chaos of the music industry, I really yearned for the inner freedom I'd had while traveling + meditating regularly. I learned how to meditate with a teacher, and 4 years of daily meditation later, I now teach the same style I practice. It is my greatest honor to help people make friends with their racing thoughts and get to know their own minds so they can live happier, calmer, more joyful lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I taught meditation at Google one year after starting my business; in my first year, I taught over 200 people how to meditate, and honestly, one of my biggest accomplishments is teaching over 30 members of my family how to meditate!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It can be difficult to do everything alone. Right now, my business is just me, and sometimes it can feel lonely. It can also be hard to self-motivate when there's no one telling me what to do or when to do it ;)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you are passionate about what you're doing and that it really feeds your soul.
  2. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Not everything will turn out how you thought it would, but trying things is how you learn. Try everything, experiment, learn and refine from there.
  3. Make sure you have some daily practices that keep you feeling grounded + help you deal with the stress of running a business. Of course, I'm going to suggest daily meditation, but it can be anything that keeps you feel calm and grounded on the inside so you can take on all the challenges of the outside world!
