What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business, Open Haus Therapy, is a practice that invites non-traditional therapy seekers to approach healing through the outdoors and expressive arts. My clients are creatives and high achievers who are looking to reduce self-doubt and feel free from parts of their past that hold them back. Because they are out-of-the-box thinkers, out-of-the-box therapy is a better fit for them.
Tell us about yourself
The road to my becoming a therapist was full of surprises. My background is in the professional theatre world, where I learned the value of showing up as collaborative, flexible, and tenacious. When I decided to get my masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Drama Therapy, I never expected that I would end up running a primarily Walk and Talk therapy practice. But, when I look back, it does make sense. Being a theatre artist encourages you to respond to the present moment honestly. And I believe the present moment is asking for an updated and human-centered approach to mental health.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have begun to coach other therapists on providing walk-and-talk services to their clients, and that is my biggest accomplishment. I want to make it easier for other therapists to expand their own thoughts on how their business can look.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest part for me is learning that I can not be everything to everyone. I think as a helper, I want to be able to support anyone who comes my way. I have had to learn that being authentic to myself, what I uniquely provide, and the skills that I hold are what is going to sustain my business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Get clear on a business mission statement that you can always come back to.
- Notice when you are operating from a place of fear.
- Know when it is time to outsource. Marketing, CPA, etc.
