Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Taimani Emerald, Founder of Emerald Creative, located in Beaverton, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an author, illustrator, and artist whose business focuses on creating art and curriculum based on hard-to-talk-about topics with colorful/cheerful art that anyone would enjoy. Our focus on creating curriculum for schools and businesses includes a very wide demographic, mainly targeting individuals who want to make a difference in their communities, whether that be in their Schools, businesses, or even just the home that they reside in.

Tell us about yourself

When I first started Emerald Creative in 2020 during the George Floyd riots, when my son asked a simple question on, "What was wrong, " I didn't have the words to describe what was wrong to a child his age. So I started drawing, what I drew was originally supposed to be for my friends and family, but it turned into so much more when I realized how powerful my art could be. What motivates me is knowing that I have a voice and I can use my art to inspire others, youth, and adults, to use their voice and truly make a difference in this world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Despite getting a book deal, international features, and being featured on Good Morning America and Huffington Post, My biggest accomplishment is seeing the change that my art has already made and being able to see the potential of the future world changers that are currently attending my classes. Nothing makes me more proud than seeing my kids use my art as a tool to find their own voice and advocate for themselves.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Time management is what I would say, and imposter syndrome and reminding myself that I deserve everything I have and my work has a purpose.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Finished is better than perfect.
  2. Show up for yourself, as yourself.
  3. Utilize social media.
