Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erica Ledwell of Emeku Ekua Luxury Hair, located in Ridley Park, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Emeku Ekua Luxury Hair is an affordable hair care brand. We specialize in authentic hair extensions and natural quality hair care products.

Tell us about yourself

Honestly, my brand sorta cultivated itself. I started off making a wig for my late mother, who was suffering from an aggressive form of cancer. She wasn’t too pleased with the options at our local beauty supply store. She still motivates me on a day-to-day basis. It’s important that we as people feel our most beautiful and confident no matter what we’re personally facing behind closed doors. Everyone should know and see their beauty, whether we choose to use enhancement or not; if I’m able to remind one person of how beautiful they truly are, then I’ve already won.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has to be stepping outside my comfort zone. I sort of dab myself a bit of an introvert. I’ve learned over the year that when I’m engulfed in something I’m passionate about, it diminishes all my social fears. I surprise myself every day with how I interact with my customers while suggesting and tailoring products to fit their specific needs. I guess you can say my business aided me in my personal growth.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Exposure! I believe still believe the hardest thing as a business owner is exposure. There’s no big surprise that the hair industry is over-saturated. Although that could be a blessing and a curse, it is just frustrating at times. It’s like you know you have quality products that could provide a solution to so many problems, but you just can seem to get in front of all the people who truly need your assistance.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Wow, great question. The top 3 tips for someone seeking to start a business and things I wish I knew… Research, Startup funding, Target demographic, and give yourself grace. Now don’t get me wrong, I did my research, but I learned something new every day along the way, and it always feels like you never have enough capital, which I also learned is normal. I was lucky my target demographic found me, but I wasn’t as kind to myself as to should have been. I now grant myself grace and patience.
