Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Doug Davis, Founder of Embracing Change Life and Health Coaching, located in Acton, ME, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Life and Health Coach, and I work with people who want to manage their weight or replace existing habits with healthy ones.

Tell us about yourself

I first started on my health improvement journey about ten years ago and managed to lose 60 pounds, get off blood pressure medication and run a marathon at 47 years old. Since then, I became interested in helping other people maximize their health and start being happy, and then about two years ago, my wife and I decided to pursue certifications as life and health coaches. I wake up every day excited by the opportunity to help people improve their health and truly be happy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Deciding to walk away from the corporate manufacturing world and give my all to health coaching. Besides Embracing Change Life and Health coaching, I coach 40 hours a week for a large organization, so I really get to spend a lot of time helping people.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

With more than 70% of Americans overweight or obese, and millions more suffering from chronic stress or lack of sleep, there are millions of people that want or need to improve their health - the biggest challenge is connecting with those people to show them how easy it is to make small changes that can have a huge impact on their health, well-being, and happiness.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't hesitate: Jump right in and be bold; it won't get done if you tip-toe.
  2. Care about the people you are there to serve. People are your biggest asset, whether that is employees or customers.
  3. Take time for yourself - growing and running an amazing business can be hard, and if you don't take time for yourself, the stress could take it all away from you in one way or another.
