Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Schuler, founder of Ember Wellness, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Ember Wellness, a skincare and wellness brand that aspires for complete transparency, minimalism, and sustainability. My idea was to create beautiful and effective products that people want to display and use every day. Enhance their self-care ritual as it’s important for everyone to indulge and care for their body and skin.

Ember's customers are curious about how they can minimize the number of ingredients they are putting on their faces and how they can impact the long-term future of the planet by practicing conspicuous consumption. Ember aligns with those values completely. We also started a fund called the Ember Alchemy fund, where we donate 1% of our profits to causes that nourish people, animals, and the planet every quarter. We are excited to see these donations growing in size.

Tell us about yourself

I’m very passionate about clean beauty and sustainability. On my own search for products, I realized that most “clean” products still had upwards of 20 incomprehensible ingredients. That sparked my idea for Ember, a back-to-basics approach with minimal and clean ingredients sourced from the earth. Each product has only three ingredients or less and is sourced and packaged sustainably.

What motivates me to continue building Ember is that the beauty industry is one of the most rapidly evolving industries, and to see a recent shift in trends towards sustainability and mindful consumption is extremely inspiring and important for our future and, more importantly, our children’s future. Having a business that upholds these values allows me to educate others and be a leader in this movement.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, I’m most proud of meeting new people each week that get excited about the brand and fall in love with the products, ethos, and design. It makes me so happy and reminds me why I started this business in the first place!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balancing work and family. I have two amazing kids, a 12-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son, and there are days I have to choose between being a mom and being a business owner. It’s definitely tough, but I’m doing my best to juggle both!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Some tips I would give to anyone else looking to start a business today are to not only follow your passion but follow your curiosity, reflect your personal values in your businesses values and stay true and transparent with your community (friends, followers, customers, etc.) as they are your biggest allies and ultimately the reason you will succeed in the long run.
