Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elyse Resch, a nutrition therapist and author based in Santa Monica, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Registered Dietitian Nutrition/Nutrition Therapist and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist in private practice for over 40 years. My clients typically present with disordered eating and eating disorders.

Tell us about yourself

This is my second career. I was an elementary school teacher straight out of college and then went back to graduate school at 30 for my master's degree in nutrition. Having come from a family that was very interested in nutrition, it seemed the perfect fit. I also was experiencing an undiagnosed eating disorder at the time, which increased my interest in this work. What motivates me every day to do this work is social justice and the belief that all bodies deserve respect and dignity.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am also an author/co-author. I co-authored Intuitive Eating, which is in its 4th edition, The Intuitive Eating Workbook, and the Intuitive Eating Card Deck. I authored The Intuitive Eating Workbook for Teens and the Intuitive Eating Journal. These books have brought many clients to my business, as have podcasts and media interviews that I regularly do.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me is keeping up with the multitudinous emails I receive and the admin work I must do to stay on top of things. I am committed to responding to each email, and it takes many hours of my workweek to keep up.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a business in which you are passionate.
  2. Get advice and/or supervision in your field to help you understand the ins and outs of your business.
  3. Be fully responsive to calls and emails that you receive from potential clients, requests for interviews, and speaking engagements. Don't let an assistant respond, as no assistant can know what's in your head and heart. Assistants can do admin work, just not personal response work.
