Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ellen Daly, Founder of Sundown Lines, located in Tamworth, NSW, Australia.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business has two sections. Firstly, I create commissioned artwork for clients in Australia. The second part is my online workshops. My Textured Art Workshop teachers people how to make art as I do, and my Business Growth Workshop supports people in turning their textured art hobby into a thriving business.

Tell us about yourself

I started creating textured art in January 2022 as I needed a new hobby and something nice to do for myself after my son went to bed. I'm also a primary school teacher, so after my 2nd son was born, I really wanted to be able to continue to work from home and look after my kids. The best way to scale my art business was to combine my two passions and skills: art and teaching! This led to the development of my online workshops. My motivation is creating something that allows myself and my husband me to work flexible hours around our family. Our kids are our biggest motivation for this!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

After I created my textured art workshop, the success of Sundown Lines grew much bigger than I ever could have imagined! This allowed my husband also to join the business, and it's now both of our full-time jobs! To be able to do this was amazing! I also have sold my workshop to people all over the world, which is amazing!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is being able to switch off! During very busy times, it sometimes feels like my husband and I are constantly working; however, the balance that it gives when it's not like that is truly worth it! We're getting better at learning to switch off from it all!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Always start by setting goals. Think about your personal goals, financial goals, and career goals. If you can find a way to balance all of these, that's a bonus!
  2. Keep on top of things! Start your week by planning out some tasks so that you can stay productive and get the important things done each week.
  3. Make sure whatever you do, it's something that you love and enjoy! Whilst there are lots of business opportunities that might just make you lots of money, if your heart isn't in it, you will get bored! No matter way, you should always try to find something about it that you enjoy! This will help you stay motivated and engaged!
