Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elizabeth Gillette, Founder of Elizabeth Gillette Coaching + Consulting & Heirloom Counseling, located in Ashville, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own two businesses: Heirloom Counseling and Elizabeth Gillette Coaching and Consulting. I'm a therapist by training and have developed a coaching business to support people in having the healthiest relationships possible. My clients are folks who recognize that they want to show up in the world with integrity and value connection, so they work with me to improve their relational patterns and heal from the challenges and trauma of their past. I use attachment theory as a framework.

Tell us about yourself

My work has always had a relational theme to it. I am deeply committed to creating healthier communities, and I believe the way we do that is by working on ourselves in the context of relationships. My own personal work utilizing attachment theory has absolutely changed my life, and I love to bring that wisdom and research to my work with clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of my biggest accomplishments has been authoring the Attachment Theory Workbook for Couples between the births of my two children. It was a wild time of life, but so worth it!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Not being able to support as many people as I would like to--there is only so much time in the day, and my ambition is much bigger than my schedule would allow!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be your most genuine self. Someone is looking for exactly what you are offering, and you don't have to conform to what you think is "appropriate" or "needed."
  2. The things that capture your attention in your personal life can be the things you base your business on. For me, learning about and understanding relationships has translated into a business that I absolutely adore. That motivation is what keeps me going, even when being a business owner is challenging.
  3. Pace yourself! Growth and change are gradual and happen over time. You don't need to rush! You've got this.
